A valuable lesson learned
Many of you from small towns and rural areas can remember years back when you left the windows open, front door, keys in the car, etc all night long and really did not give it any thought. Those days are long since gone as I was reminded of this morning.
I have a habit of locking our vehicles and certainly the house doors prior to retiring for the evening. Last night for some reason, I neglected to lock the Civic or the Big Red Truck. We got home late from a friends and were in a rush.
This morning as I was headed out to floor duty I opened the Civic door to see my government badges in the front seat and further, my glove compartment open. My first thought was that Pamela Ann was looking for something and had neglected to return things to their proper place. I went back in and inquired and she looked at me rather oddly. I went back out and looked at the van - no issues - locked up tight and then out to Big Red - yep - it was strewn. Registration and insurance papers everywhere.
I contacted the Police and they came out. Fortunately for us, nothing was taken. Not sure what they were looking for, but they only went in the unsecured vehicles and did not touch anything of value (sunglasses, radar detectors, etc). Possibly they were looking for credit cards, wallets, or even guns - not sure. The Police stated that they had many reports in that area from last night - same MO. I thanked them and let them go to the next call.
I informed all the neighbors in our small community to check their areas. I cannot help but feel a violated feeling. It is odd and unlike any that I have ever felt. A valuable lesson learned and fortunately for us, not a costly one. I guess it is time to extend the dog's fence around the entire yard.
For those of you like me who sometimes forget to secure your vehicles and check your doors before retiring for the evening - please make a conscious effort to do so. We live in a neighborhood that I have considered very immune to such - reality is there are no immune areas anymore. This is not our country of the 60's and 70's.
Thanks to the Clarksville Police Officers who came out and were so professional and understanding. They are many times overlooked.
Thanks for allowing me to vent.
Regards,
Tim Cash
